Barti walked behind me as we slowly made our way up the stairs to the apartment. The apartment was dark as I expected. When we got to the kitchen I just stopped in the doorway. Things were as I left it - sink full of dishes, pan on the stove, some food out on the counter. I let out a sigh looking at it all.
âHey, why donât you pack up what you need, and Iâll do the dishes,â Barti said looking around the kitchen.
âYou donât have to do that.â
âI want too.â
âYou already did the dishes downstairs.â
âDishes are kinda my thing,â he said with a grin as he started running the water in the sink. Not wanting to argue over the issue, I walked into my room and looked around. It felt different, smaller than before or maybe I was different, I couldnât be sure. I picked up my backpack and walked around the room collecting the items I needed. When I was done, I leaned across the bed and closed the window. As I walked through the kitchen to the bathroom, Barti was scrubbing the frying pan. In the bathroom, I grabbed my toothbrush and a couple odds and ends. I wasnât sure what I needed and the reality was that I was just going downstairs.
âI think Iâm packed,â I said leaning on the doorway to the kitchen.
âYou sound unsure.â
âI donât really know what I need or what to expect.â
âItâs like a sleepover. Pack as if itâs a sleepover.â
âI have never had a sleepover,â I replied suddenly feeling awkward.
âNever?â Barti said pausing what he was doing and looked at me.
âWell, maybe before the second grade but I donât really remember if I did but not since then, that I know for sure.â
âIâm sorry that your first sleepover is at my babciaâs. It should really be more exciting. Iâm sure my cousin would kill to have a sleepover,â he said putting a dish in the drying rack.
âIf sheâs ever not grounded,â I responded.
âIt doesnât happen often, but sheâs not always grounded.â
âCan I do anything?â I asked feeling odd standing and watching him clean my kitchen.
âAlmost done,â he said flashing me a smile over his shoulder.
âAre you always this agreeable? Doing dishes for someone you didnât even know a week ago?â
âNot always but I thought an exception should be made,â he replied causing me to smile.
âThere Iâm all done,â he said drying his hands on the dishrag.
âI donât know if I could thank you enough,â I said as we walked to the front door.
âJoey, itâs really okay. Iâm just glad I was able to be here. If babcia had called an hour earlier, I would still be in the grocery store with my mom trying to decide between grape or cherry tomatoes,â he said with a sigh.
âSounds rough,â I said bumping him with my shoulder. We now stood in the front hallway. I knew he had to go and I couldnât ask him to stay but I didnât want him to leave.
âWe still on for our lunch date tomorrow?â he asked, and I nodded.
