Barti walked behind me as we slowly made our way up the stairs to the apartment. The apartment was dark as I expected. When we got to the kitchen I just stopped in the doorway. Things were as I left it - sink full of dishes, pan on the stove, some food out on the counter. I let out a sigh looking at it all.

“Hey, why don’t you pack up what you need, and I’ll do the dishes,” Barti said looking around the kitchen.

“You don’t have to do that.”

“I want too.”

“You already did the dishes downstairs.”

“Dishes are kinda my thing,” he said with a grin as he started running the water in the sink. Not wanting to argue over the issue, I walked into my room and looked around. It felt different, smaller than before or maybe I was different, I couldn’t be sure. I picked up my backpack and walked around the room collecting the items I needed. When I was done, I leaned across the bed and closed the window. As I walked through the kitchen to the bathroom, Barti was scrubbing the frying pan. In the bathroom, I grabbed my toothbrush and a couple odds and ends. I wasn’t sure what I needed and the reality was that I was just going downstairs.

“I think I’m packed,” I said leaning on the doorway to the kitchen.

“You sound unsure.”

“I don’t really know what I need or what to expect.”

“It’s like a sleepover. Pack as if it’s a sleepover.”

“I have never had a sleepover,” I replied suddenly feeling awkward.

“Never?” Barti said pausing what he was doing and looked at me.

“Well, maybe before the second grade but I don’t really remember if I did but not since then, that I know for sure.”

“I’m sorry that your first sleepover is at my babcia’s. It should really be more exciting. I’m sure my cousin would kill to have a sleepover,” he said putting a dish in the drying rack.

“If she’s ever not grounded,” I responded.

“It doesn’t happen often, but she’s not always grounded.”

“Can I do anything?” I asked feeling odd standing and watching him clean my kitchen.

“Almost done,” he said flashing me a smile over his shoulder.

“Are you always this agreeable? Doing dishes for someone you didn’t even know a week ago?”

“Not always but I thought an exception should be made,” he replied causing me to smile.

“There I’m all done,” he said drying his hands on the dishrag.

“I don’t know if I could thank you enough,” I said as we walked to the front door.

“Joey, it’s really okay. I’m just glad I was able to be here. If babcia had called an hour earlier, I would still be in the grocery store with my mom trying to decide between grape or cherry tomatoes,” he said with a sigh.

“Sounds rough,” I said bumping him with my shoulder. We now stood in the front hallway. I knew he had to go and I couldn’t ask him to stay but I didn’t want him to leave.

“We still on for our lunch date tomorrow?” he asked, and I nodded.
